Book Review: The Lies We Told by Camilla Way
This is the first mystery/thriller that kept me guessing that I have read in a while!
If you like Then She Was Gone or Emma in the Night, you will love this book! There are two parts: Beth- a woman in awe of her hateful daughter who is unapologetically awful, even at the young age of just 7 years old. Beth describes the disturbing behavior and alludes to a lie that she and her husband told years ago that is keeping her from finding her daughter the help that she obviously needs. Beth is a very reliable, likeable narrator. Her quiet life with her husband seems pleasant enough, until you find out about the absolute horrible life situation they face with their daughter.
The second element of the story is told by Clara, a young writer at a magazine who is blindsided when her boyfriend, Luke, disappears one night with no explanation. When she finds out that he has left everything behind, including his phone, wallet and misses an interview at work, she reaches out to his friends and family and eventually the police to find out what happened to her beloved boyfriend. The cat and mouse game that follows kept me guessing, I could not put this book down. There's a stalker who apparently would not leave Luke alone and he didn't tell Clara about how awful the situation was, until she finds his email account after his disappearance. As she digs deeper into the details of his life in order to find him, she starts uncovering even more secrets Luke kept from her. Eventually, she reveals so many terrible secrets that her determination to find her boyfriend turns into an effort to save her own life.
Seriously addicting!
